Sexuell läggning: "Det som påverkar mest är hur öppen man kan vara"

Richard Bränström, forskare i hälsopsykologi på institutionen för klinisk neurovetenskap vid Karolinska Institutet, har studerat situationen för HB-personer i 28 europeiska länder. Genom att granska lagstiftning och mäta befolkningarnas acceptans av homosexualitet har han värderat hur stigmatiserande länderna är gentemot HB-personer. Det har jämförts med resultatet från enkätundersökningar där HB-personer svarat på frågor om sin livskvalitet.

– Vi ser ett tydligt samband. Ju mer stigmatiserande länderna är desto sämre psykisk hälsa har HB-personerna. Det är ovanligt att man kan se en så stark koppling mellan ett lands lagstiftning och attityder och människors hälsa, säger Richard Bränström.

Utsatta minoriteter

Ohälsa bland människor som tillhör utsatta minoriteter brukar ofta förklaras med att de utsätts för specifika stressfaktorer. Det handlar om samhällets attityder, diskriminering, social uteslutning, hot och mobbning. Det finns också individuella faktorer. Människor som förväntar sig att bli illa behandlade internaliserar ofta omgivningens negativa attityder så att de nedvärderar sig själva
